What do French people today think of Marie Antoinette?Vous voulez vraiment le savoir ?
Accrochez-vous aux branches.
Réponse 1Many in France are still hard-core anti-monarchists and very fond of the Republic and the Revolution.
For most of these people, Marie-Antoinette is basically still a treacherous harpy.
Then there's a tiny percentage of pro-monarchists in France. These people probably have a much more positive view of the Austrian queen. but rarely elevate her to the status of martyr. This is most often bestowed to Louis XVII.
Réponse 2I don’t think she was a bad person, arrogant and insensitive. She just didn’t understand that people suffered and were really angry. She was raised to be queen : have children, live in a palace surrounded by nobles. I’m pretty sure she didn’t even know how people lived out there, like her husband.
And for the famous sentence “They don’t have bread let them eat cake” she allegedly pronounced, now we know that was a rumour from revolutionnaries to make people angrier against her.
So I think that Marie-Antoinette was certainly naïve and ignorant of the “real life”, she was at the wrong place and wrong moment, and so was executed as a scapegoat. I don’t think french people hate her anymore, because it was a long time ago and now we know the truth about her and what happened.
Réponse 3She's a part of our history but deserve what appened to her. Most of French people are not royalist because of the French revolution and have a repulsion for the monarchy.
