Puisque nous avons mentionné des titres en anglais, je saute sur l'occasion de dire du bien de celui-ci !



Stanley LOOMIS, The Fatal Friendship, Marie Antoinette, Count Fersen, and the Flight to Varennes , Doubleday and Company, 1972.

Le livre s'ouvre sur une petite biographie croisée des protagonistes. Ensuite, avec le plus grand sérieux et un oeil très critique, l'auteur examine leur amitié et ses répercussions.

Autant le dire tout de suite, Loomis est un partisan de la thèse de l'amour charnel. Et c'est justement ce que son ouvrage a d'intéressant ! Au lieu de manipuler subtilement son lectorat pour l'amener à ses vues, Loomis analyse avec objectivité le matériel historique et montre que, dans les faits, son opinion repose sur une intime conviction, rien de plus. Car il n'y a rien à tirer des lettres et autres passages de journaux trop souvent sortis de leur contexte, si pas tronqués.

De plus, l'auteur développe une réelle sympathie pour le comte de Fersen, ce qui présente l'avantage d'humaniser un personnage d'ordinaire un peu raide.

Je viens de le lire et il est vraiment bien. Dommage qu'il ne soit plus en vente, car j'ai une vieille copie toute jaunie et il mériterait vraiment une réédition, je ne le trouve pas du tout obsolète.
Un extrait émouvant : "Each time one reads an account of the Flight to Varennes one finds oneself hoping that this time they might somehow make it to safety. At Fromentières, some five hours away from Pont-Sommevesle, they were so close to success that it seems almost impossible that something could go wrong and that they should not reach their destination. One entertains this hope because in that carriage one suddenly sees them not as the French royal family but as unhappy, vulnerable, and familiar human beings."

Chaque fois que je relis le récit de ce voyage, chaque fois que je revois un film à ce sujet, chaque fois même que j'y pense, je ne peux m'empêcher de tressaillir, comme s'il y avait encore un espoir...

My second Book on MA ;P this time with more of Count Fersen throwen in, I though this book was going to be about the so called 'affair' they had, but it was about (well, what the name of the book is...) 'the fatal friendship' indeed it was fatal in the end. The author lets the reader decided if they did have an affair or not, personally, I'm still not sure since there is no in fact 'proof' of the whole incident. But affair or not it was still a really good read and its a MUST for history fans.

This was ok - he duplicates his wonderful style from his work on the Terror, but this book lacks something of the grandeur and insight of that excellent book.

... logique, la Terreur, c'est la Grande Histoire, Fersen la petite histoire...

Interesting read. I walked away with a different view on the Fersen/ Antoinette relationship than I had at the beginning. I really enjoyed his personal accounts in particular.

The author looked at the relationship (possible affair) between Marie Antoinette and the Swedish Diplomat, Axel Fersen. I didnt find the book that compelling, but it was enlightening about the chain of events which led up to the execution of King Louis XVI and his wife.
