| Une Marie Antoinette voilée par Marie Claudine Lezay-Marnesia: Marie Claudine Lezay-Marnesia (née de Nettancourt-Vaubecourt) (French, 1746-1794)
FOOTNOTES The Marchioness of Lezay-Marnesia was a pupil of Augustin. She was an amateur painter in miniature and oil. She married in 1766, Claude François Adrien, Marquis de Lezay-Marnesia (1735-1800), Statesman and poet. As a member of the aristocracy she would have supported the fallen royalty Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette. She died in London, in 1794, presumably having fled France after the death of the King and Queen on the guillotine. It is not possible to ascertain whether it would have been possible for the artist to have painted the Queen whilst she was imprisoned in the Temple fortress (as suggested on the reverse of the present lot). However, she has sensitively depicted the fallen woman, stripped of her finery, but able to retain her diginity in the face of death.http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/12068/lot/223/ _________________ rien que la mort peut me faire cesser de vous aimer

Nous pourrons également nous interroger sur la vraisemblance de la note inscrite au revers du médaillon.
