On view here is an extremely rare depiction of a funeral: it is a mournful scene of the laying to rest of recently guillotined Queen Marie-Antoinette at the (no longer existing) Madeleine Cemetery in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. During her trial and execution, she was referred to by a rather diminishing nickname "veuve Capet" given to her by the revolutionaries ("Capet" was originally the nickname of her husband, King Louis XVI, who was executed nine months prior to that). The Madeleine Cemetery was attached to the old Church of the Madeleine (demolished in 1799; CLICK HERE). On January 21, 1815, Louis XVI and his wife's remains were re-buried in the Basilica of Saint-Denis. In 1816, Chapelle Expiatoire was erected at their original burial site.
This relatively small oil painting was executed in 1881 by Dresden artist Viktor von Schubert-Soldern. In the same (1881) year, it was shown at two exhibitions: the Dresden Academic Exhibition of 1881 and the Berlin Academic Exhibition of 1881.
Viktor von Schubert-Soldern (1834 Prague - 1912 Dresden) began his artistic career as a student of the Prague Academy. In 1857, he became a pupil of Leutze in Dusseldorf; in 1860-1861 studied at the Academy of Antwerp; later, two years long - under Cogniet in Paris. He spent the years between 1863 and 1866 in Italy; later, returned to Paris, then lived in Brussels and, finally, settled in Dresden. He was chiefly active as a historical painter.
