Marie Antoinette’s Confidante: The Rise and Fall of the Princesse de Lamballe is a comprehensive look at quite an unknown woman. It is well written, though perhaps it is a bit too much like a novel at times and I began to wonder if fact had begun to meet fiction. The line is quite thin. However, it is a good book, and I am glad someone took this woman from the shadows. She deserves to be remembered for more than her gruesome death.

Voilà. Du coup, je ne suis pas sûr de le mettre sur ma liste.

En plus, la couverture est moche.

Ce compte-rendu est intéressant, parce qu'il relaie une impression souvent dégagée par les biographies de la princesse de Lamballe: la réalité semble se confondre avec le roman, voire avec le fantasme.

C'est à croire qu'il est vraiment difficile d'établir une bio de la princesse qui tienne la route. Au premier abord, je pense que la tâche a l'air aisée: abondances de sources, d'illustrations, de témoignages... Et puis, ça se corse quand on se rend compte que beaucoup de ces documents sont apocryphes et qu'il y a en fait plus de questions que d'affirmations dans la vie de cette mystérieuse princesse...

... qui, au bout du compte, semble n'en avoir fait qu'à sa tête.

Je marque mon désaccord par rapport au commentaire précédent. Le corpus concernant la Princesse de Lamballe est riche et variés. Il comprend des mémoires, des témoignages, des rapports, des lettres ainsi qu'une iconographie abondante.
