  Here's how you can support the palace's efforts to replant her beloved Virgina tulip trees.

Here's some uplifting news just in time for Earth Day: The Palace of Versailles has kicked off a long overdue restoration of Marie-Antoinette's private gardens, known as the Queen's Grove and located just to the west of the iconic Orangerie Parterre.

The palace announced its plans to restore the Queen's Grove on the heels of the 20th anniversary of the "great storm of 1999," a crippling storm with hurricane-force winds that wreaked havoc on the grounds of Versailles, uprooting nearly 15,000 trees. (A 2005 storm took down another of Marie-Antoinette's favorite trees on the palace grounds, an oak tree outside the Petit Trianon.) The restoration is understood to cost around $2 million.

Although the Queen's Grove retains its original layout, Versailles acknowledges the garden deteriorated significantly during the 19th and 20th centuries. "The walks with their imposing foliage have now become unremarkable paths and the botanical diversity is gone, giving way to uniform bushes," the palace press release states.

In preparation for the restoration, Versailles has conducted archeological research to unearth the original design for the Queen's Grove, from its layout to its plantings.

The four-acre garden was originally planted with a labyrinth, or maze, by Louis XIV in the middle of the 17th century. But by the time Marie-Antoinette resided at Versailles, that hyper-manicured landscaping style had fallen out of fashion, thanks to influence from English landscape architects such as Capability Brown, who championed a wilder, more romantic style.

With the hopes of creating a private sanctuary where she could wander free from the constant scrutiny of court life at the palace, the queen hired architect Michel-Barthélemy Hazon to rework the plot.

The resulting design, created in 1776, was somewhat of a hybrid between the natural English style and more linear French style with a series of meandering paths connecting more formal arbors and groves of certain specific types of trees and flowering shrubs. Importantly, the Queen's Grove remains distinct among the gardens of Versailles in that it derives its prominence more from the plant species themselves than the garden's formal design.

The restoration will be conducted in stages, beginning with the replanting of Virginal tulip trees (liriodendron tulipifera) in the central square and along the access paths. Marie-Antoinette was particularly fond of the North American native species, which was first planted on the grounds of Versailles by King Louis XV, her grandfather-in-law, a passionate botanist who cultivated thousands of plant species from around the world on the Trianon grounds.

Tulip trees can grow well over 100 feet tall with orange-yellow tulip-shaped flowers that bloom in May and June and bright green leaves that turn golden yellow in the fall. George Washington also admired the flowering tree; a pair of tulip trees planted on the bowling green at Mount Vernon in the late 18th century still stand today.

Following the tulip tree restoration, Versailles will gradually replant the perimeter arbors with flowering trees and shrubs. The selection of species, which will include flowering cherry trees, staghorn sumacs, white fringe trees, fruiting hawthorns, Judas trees, and quince trees, will be consistent with those used in the gardens at the end of the 18th century. Reproductions of original sculpture and furnishings will also be installed.

• Avec plus de 800 hectares de terrain et un palais de 2 300 pièces, le château de Versailles nécessite, il va sans dire, énormément d'entretien. Vu le contexte de pandémie actuel, certaines zones du domaine pourraient attendre un certain temps avant d’être restaurées à l’identique. Pour sa part, le jardin privé de Marie Antoinette, dit le Jardin de la Reine, était resté quasiment en l’état depuis le XVIIIe siècle et avait subi des dégâts majeurs lors de la tempête de 1999, qui avait vu quelque 15 000 arbres déracinés dans le domaine. Mais une restauration à hauteur 2 millions d’euros, prévue sur plusieurs années, est en cours.
  
  Le jardin, situé à l'ouest de l'Orangerie, était à l'origine un labyrinthe construit sous Louis XIV au XVIIe siècle. Lorsque Marie Antoinette résidait à Versailles au milieu du XVIIIe, il était déjà démodé et délabré. La reine a alors engagé l'architecte Michel-Barthélemy Hazon pour repenser les lieux, non pas dans le style français linéaire du reste du château, mais inspiré par les jardins anglais plus naturels, alors en vogue outre-Manche. Ces jardins étaient son sanctuaire privé. « Dans le jardin, Marie Antoinette se promenait et se détendait à sa guise », explique Abbie McLean, guide touristique de Versailles de l’organisme The Tour Guy. « Dans ce domaine, elle goûtait une intimité véritable, chose inexistante à la cour de Versailles. »

• Contrairement aux autres jardins de Versailles, dans le Jardin de la Reine, les plantes, et non la conception formelle, étaient à l’honneur. Marie Antoinette a apporté des arbres, des arbustes et des fleurs d'Amérique du Nord à son jardin, son préféré étant le tulipier de Virginie. Après la restauration, la vision de la reine pourra de nouveau se réaliser. Des recherches archéologiques effectuées avant la replantation ce printemps ont en effet confirmé la disposition précise du Jardin de la Reine tel qu'il était en 1776, l'année de sa création. Les espèces végétales d'origine seront replantées. Des reproductions des sculptures et du mobilier d'origine sont aussi au programme.
  
  Alors que les premiers tulipiers ont été plantés cet hiver, les travaux de restauration devraient se poursuivre au cours des deux prochaines années, même si les portes de Versailles sont actuellement fermées en raison de la pandémie de coronavirus. Mais les Jardins de la Reine en ont vu d’autres, et après sa restauration, ils devraient être plus sublimes que jamais, réalisant ainsi l’un des vœux de cette reine qui n’en finit pas de faire parler d’elle.
