This beautifully illustrated book sheds new light on the personal life of Marie Antoinette and reveals hidden aspects of her Versailles. Marie Antoinette was a mirror of her time. Never before has a queen been so passionately admired and adulated, then hunted, vilified, and defamed. From the young queen playing a shepherdess on stage, unaware of the turmoil in the capital, to France’s "martyr queen," the author demystifies the legend, unveiling the woman behind the queen, and the wife and mother behind the sovereign.By tracing her footsteps through Versailles, discovering her voice through her letters, and encountering little-known works in her private art collection, the reader gains new insight on the tragically brief life of a passionate, sensitive, dramatic, and captivating woman. Organized chronologically, with lavish new photography and a wealth of unpublished material, this is a nuanced portrait of Marie Antoinette and her Versailles.About the Author Hélène Delalex is Heritage Conservation Manager at the Château de Versailles and assistant exhibition curator.

Hélène Delalex text is succinct but entertaining all the way through. I didn't always agree with her interpretations (namely regarding the Fersen affair, as regular readers may have already guessed!) but there is a clear passion for Marie Antoinette and her times that shines through in every page. Readers already familiar with Marie Antoinette's story won't necessarily find anything new in terms of biographical information, but since the book seems designed to familiarize readers with Marie Antoinette and introduce them to her personality and life, this isn't really an issue. Accompanying Delalex's text are quotes from a myriad of different sources, including letters written by Marie Antoinette and her mother; published memoirs of her contemporaries; quotes from biographers and historians, including the Goncourt brothers and the delightful Pierre de Nolhac, and more. The quotes are all perfectly chosen, never feeling unnecessary or misplaced in the book. . _________________ TUTTO A ME GUIDA
